About International Units (IU)

IU (International Units) is a standardized unit of measurement used in medicine to express the biological activity or potency of certain substances, such as enzymes, antibiotics, and insulin. Rather than indicating the physical amount of a substance, IU reflects its pharmacological effect.

In diabetology, IU is commonly used to indicate insulin units. Some authors also use the abbreviations U (Unit) or E (Unit).

One insulin unit is equivalent to 0.042 mg of pure insulin. Conversely, 1 mg of pure insulin equals approximately 28 IU. Because different insulin preparations may vary in purity and biological activity depending on their manufacturing process, the IU is based on the potency of a standardized reference preparation.
